The perfect calcium-rich, high protein food for native wild birds, hedgehogs, reptiles, and fish.
The new go-to food source for bird-fanciers, twitchers and wild-life enthusiasts, Black Soldier Fly (BSF) insect protein has everything our native birds need to over-winter, nest and feed young stock in the Spring. It has the all-important positive calcium to phosphorus balance, coupled with high protein (60%) and fat (25%) levels.
Also known as calciworms or chubbyworms so-called because of the high calcium content, 50 times that of mealworm, the BSF are one of the only insects identified as having a positive calcium to phosphorus ratio (2.5:1).
Why is calcium important?
It’s particularly important for bird health, bone and feather development and egg-shell strength. For hdeghogs too, calcim is vitally important. an imbalance of calcium to phosphorus ratios in their diet can cause metabolic bone disease (MBD) to develop.
Benefits of BSF Grubs? Insect-loving robins, bluetits, sparrows, woodpeckers and bluebirds – and if you’re lucky treecreepers and wrens – will flock to your garden. And, whilst you enjoy morning and evening bird-song, your garden will enjoy a reduction in pests such as aphids, mosquitoes, spiders, slugs and maybe less pesky-weeds too (sparrows consume weed seeds)!!
